Five New Emotions We'd Like To See In 'Inside Out 3' - Daily Disney News (2024)

The first Inside Out film will always be remembered as groundbreaking for the way that it introduced the world to humankind’s core 5 emotions: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust. Now, obviously they aren’t the only emotions humans are capable of feeling. While Inside Out 2 does a solid job at introducing us to the other emotions that arise in us as we get older (such as Anxiety and Embarrassment), there are still a variety of feelings that deserve representation.

So far, Disney and Pixar have not announced a third Inside Out film but that has not stopped me from thinking of some of the emotions it would be fun to see. So I’ve compiled a list.

Here are the five emotions I’d like to see in an inevitable Inside Out 3:

Love

If you thought Anxiety drove people mad, then imagine what Love would do!

Now, we did already got a taste of what Riley dating could look like in the short released after the original film titled Riley’s First Date? Still, it would be interesting to see the emotion arrive and stir some chaos after she starts to actually fall for someone. Because there are so many different kinds of love, it would also be interesting to see how if it is just a singular emotion – or if it would manifest as multitude of emotions.

For this it would probably make sense to return to Riley some time in the future as a full-fledged adult. We’ve waited 9 years for this film, so that shouldn’t be a problem.

Dream casting: Ideally, this role should go to someone who is the King or Queen of romance films, particularly romantic comedies. My top picks would either be Meg Ryan, Julia Roberts or even Tom Hanks.

Wonder

This one is a no-brainer, especially considering that Disney’s 100th anniversary slogan was “100 Years of Wonder.”

While Riley has no doubt already experienced wonder in her life, perhaps this emotion is similar to Nostalgia, appearing only briefly when applicable. Truthfully it’s hard to imagine a scenario where Riley would experience this emotion for an extended amount of time – unless maybe she went to Walt Disney World for the first time?!? (the cross-promotion would be insane) – but that doesn’t mean it should not be introduced or explored in the future.

Dream casting: Someone hilarious. Tony Hale would probably be great, considering that Forky spent all of Toy Story 4 being in awe of everything, but he can’t be because he’s already the new voice of Fear. Other great options would be Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd or Eddie Murphy.

Regret

Obviously, as we get older we start to feel immense regret for things that we did not do or chances we did not take. And that would be another great idea to explore in a potential third film!

Maybe Riley grows up and does not become a professional hockey player. She’s stuck at a desk job, and spends her days daydreaming about what could have been. The first Incredibles film slightly explores this with Mr. Incredible, but it would be particularly interesting to see how her emotions would handle her settling into a mediocre existence.

Dream casting: I think Adam Sandler would nail this role. He’s proven himself to be capable of both comedy and drama, and I feel like he’d bring enough humor and gravitas to help fully realize how horrifying and humanizing this emotion can be.

Loathing

Similar to anxiety, self-loathing is another very real emotion that people deal with as they get older. Just as it would be interesting to see Riley fall in love, it would be equally interesting to see her grow to resent herself.

Perhaps this emotion surfaces as a result of so much regret. Maybe her anxiety worsens. In either case, if done in a follow-up film, I imagine this character to be an absolute villain. It cannot be reigned as easily as Sadness or Anger. Perhaps it’s even a darker version of the latter locked away in one of those vaults we are introduced to in the sequel. It would need to be a joint effort from all of the characters in Riley’s brain to stop it from total self sabotage. This could be like The Avengers in Riley’s head. Think about it.

Dream casting: For the voice of this character, it would be cool to have someone who is no stranger to sinister roles. I immediately think of Anthony Hopkins, Willem Dafoe, Charlize Theron, or Cate Blanchett. But it might also be cool to cast a talented actor with has a likable demeanor onscreen, who would also have a lot of fun being evil. In that category I immediately think of actors like Toni Collette or Paul Giammatti.

Shock/Suppression

Now, while Suppression is not an emotion, I do think it might be interesting to explore what would happen if Riley bottled up her emotions. Moreover, I think it would be interesting to see it happen as a result of a major shock or even grief.

Maybe it’s the loss of a family member. Once again, maybe it’s the realization that she may never go pro as a hockey player. Either way, I’d pay to see how Pixar explores Riley’s emotions navigating that. It makes you wonder who would be at the helm if Riley decided to suppress her emotions. Would her emotional console malfunction? Would all the emotions be locked away in those vaults again by a higher power? The ideas for potential sequels are endless…

Dream casting: For this role, I think it’d be important to have someone who has been very open about their relationship with mental health. Big names that immediately come to mind include Selena Gomez, Pete Davidson, Zendaya and Ryan Reynolds.

What do you think of these potential ideas? What would you like to see in a third Inside Out film? Sound off below!
