  Great professor. my favorite one so far in my years at CSULB. I love his teaching and doesn't make class boring. we watching very interesting videos that helped us understand the concepts of sociology. TAKE HIM If you can !

  Prof Barnes is candid and hilarious. His class was the most riveting class I have ever taken. Never a dull moment in his class. Class discussions are always so interesting and I always looked forward to attending his class. He is super chill and very passionate about Sociology. Easily my favorite class of the semester.

  Very lecture heavy and is a tough grader; however, participation and attendance is a heavy influence on your final grade. The concepts are hard to grasp, but professor does a great job at breaking down concepts with examples. You NEED the book because your papers require you to reference directly from the book which impacts your overall grade too.

  Barnes is very passionate on his teachings. He is also very blunt. Do not fall behind with the material because it is a fast pace class. He does record his lectures which has helped for the papers and exams. He can be a tough grader but if you pay attention, you will pass.

  Dr. Barnes is very straight up. His lectures are very engaging, and you should participate or the class won't be fun. I don't know how I got an A, I didn't read the textbook at all, so I don't think it is worth buying, but the Ereader is your best friend in this class. His lectures go over EVERYTHING on the exams and materials, so pay attention!

  Barnes truly cares and is passionate about theory, which is good, he tries his best to make his lectures interesting because theory itself is not the most joyful read. Do not fall behind in the readings or else you will get lost in the class because he does not wait, he keeps on moving forward. Papers are super specific on his grading as well.

  This professor has a hard class theory is difficult to understand but I enjoy coming to this class because of how the class is structured, you have to participate which means the other students are involved, its one of the only classes where I know my class mates because of that and he makes and effort to help by providing pdf book pages to help.

  I was beyond scared of taking this course based on the previous reviews. YES, this course is tough and definitely not an easy A. You will have to put in much of your time in the essays and exams BUT it is doable ! Professor Barnes makes lectures funny and interesting which helps in understanding the dense material. Highly recommend!

  He is a very tough grader, but if you pay attention and take notes you should be fine. PLEASE PARTICIPATE !!!! Participation and attendance is so important for this class. Three essays, five one page assignments, and one Final essay. No quizzes.

  I liked this professor, his lectures were interesting. You can see that he is very passionate about this subject. I will say that he is a tough grader. Participation is a big part of your grade and he constantly reminds you. Overall, he is a great professor and I would take him again.

  I would take this class again if I could. The lectures are very captivating and he is very passionate in what he teaches. He is a tough grader and it's hard to get an A, but if you attend all the lectures and engage with him in class you should get a very good grade since he takes that effort into consideration for your final grade.

  Barnes is a great professor and his lectures are pretty interesting. Structure of class is clear and there is a lot of reading. Likes to give lots of B's on essays and tests; tough grader if you want an A. You have to like the subject for this class to be interesting and captivating for you to really dig into the content and do well.

  Need to go above and beyond to get an A. Grades papers harshly and expects you to know a lot for a 100 course. Constantly emphasizes how important in-class participation is, which can either help your hurt your grade. Very slow email replies. Wouldn't recommend taking him if your major is impacted, it could hurt your chances. But decent lectures

  He is a tough grader. Participation matters in this class. He is passionate about what he talks about but it just doesn't come off as interesting. He takes attendance so make sure to show up to class, cannot miss more than 2 days. There are a lot of discussion questions, make sure to reply to others for participation points.

  He's very passionate about sociology, but he's a very tough grader. There are two papers (4-5 pages), a mid-term (multiple choice with some essay questions), and the final, which is two essays (1,000 words each). I couldn't get more than a B+ in any of them. I wanted to take soc 356 with him, but I'm really glad I didn't. It would've ruined my GPA.

  The best professor in the sociology department. I took his class twice because of how much I loved his lectures. He's a tough grader for essays, but if you're ok with B's then it's nothing much. Attendance isn't mandatory but you'd miss a lot of information because of how fast paced his class is. Manageable class if you stay on top of your work.

  I suggest reading ahead so that lectures would make sense and be engaging. I would definitely reach out to him to clarify interpretations of readings or lectures. In terms of exams, it is heavy on writing and he expects academic/detailed/professional writing level (think of it like an AP LIT writing). Lecture slides and BB lacks organization.
