Shell New Energies NL, ENGIE, Vopak and Anthony Veder have signed an agreement to study the feasibility of producing, liquifying and transporting green hydrogen from Portugal to the Netherlands. The consortium envisions hydrogen being produced by electrolysis from renewable power in the industrial zone of the Sines port. Then the hydrogen is liquified and shipped via a liquid hydrogen carrier to the Port of Rotterdam for distribution and sale. The aim is to deliver a first shipment of liquid hydrogen from Sines to Rotterdam by 2027.#hydrogen #liquidhydrogenHydrogen Council Hydrogen Europe

I wonder who wins the race for the 'liquid hydrogen carrier': Methanol, Ammonia or LOHC! Basically a hydrogen gas pipeline or introduction into NG pipelines could also compete. Could also depend on the use and distribution in Rotterdam for making eSAF/efuels (then best Methanol) or hydrogen distribution.

Liquid methane is also a well-known hydrogen carrier and the technology to convert it into Hydrogen is proven and reliable. Efficiently converting methanol or ammonia back into hydrogen is still something to be proven at the same scale. đŸ€”

Just curious - isn’t it more efficient to use HDVC line to transfer renewable electricity from Portugal to Holland and do there H2 production ? That is relatively short distance

Hydrogen can be stored physically as either a gas or a liquid. Storage of hydrogen as a gas typically requires high-pressure tanks (350–700 bar [5,000–10,000 psi] tank pressure). Storage of hydrogen as a liquid requires cryogenic temperatures because the boiling point of hydrogen at one atmosphere pressure is −252.8°C.Hydrogen is most commonly transported and delivered as a liquid when high-volume transport is needed in the absence of pipelines. To liquefy hydrogen it must be cooled to cryogenic temperatures through a liquefaction process. Trucks transporting liquid hydrogen are referred to as liquid tankers. While no fuel is 100 percent safe, green hydrogen has been shown to be safer than conventional fuels in a multitude of aspects. Hydrogen is not toxic, unlike conventional fuels.

It does not look like a wonderful ideia regarding energy efficiency and economical reasoning - added to the fact that Portugal can barely produce 40% of its energy needs with renewables. It could make sense to export ammonia for industry use or even green steel, but that does not seem to be the plan. Well, let's not jump the "study" part. I'll be looking forward to the conclusions...

Milieudefensie for your information. Please note Greenpeace did not understand and support the groundbreaking work of the German politician Herman Scheer in breaking chicken-egg in solar panels at the time (-90-ies). Frans Timmermans is doing a similar thing in the storage of Renewable Energy (Fitfor55) and Vopak, together with other companies is on the forefront.L’histoire se rĂ©pĂšte ?

Liquifying hydrogen and then shipping to another location to then distribute inland? What's the net energy efficiency of this scheme please? What is the ship fuel? How and where is the ultimately H2 used?

Vopak Terminal Corpus Christi recently participated as a Demonstration Sponsor in This One's for the Gals (TOFTG) 2024 Coastal Bend Women in Industry Conference held in Robstown, Texas. The mission of TOFTG is to help high school-aged girls learn about career opportunities in construction, energy, and manufacturing. The Vopak team explained the role of tank storage and demonstrated the use of a pump system and its use in transporting products safely from Vopak tanks to a ship or truck.“This conference provided exposure of our industry to young females and our involvement supports the goal that women are encouraged to pursue opportunities in the petrochemical world,” said Anthony Ragno, Vopak Corpus Christi Terminal Manager. Our participation is part of Vopak WeConnect. The Vopak WeConnect Foundation supports Vopak and joint venture colleagues in starting projects to empower young people in local communities and connect them to the world. The World Hydrogen Summit commenced in Rotterdam, the Netherlands yesterday. Vopak's CEO Dick Richelle participatedat the roundtable the Hydrogen Council organized in cooperation with the International Hydrogen Trade Forum, hosted by the Netherlands, the UAE and Port of Rotterdam. The goal was to exchange knowledge and strengthen hydrogen cooperation between governments, international organizations and CEOs.Vopak is present at the .Meet us at stand B40 at Rotterdam Ahoy! As an independent infrastructure company, Vopak is at the heart of the development of hydrogen corridors. Through our network of 77 terminals in 23 countries, fuels and feedstocks flow between export and import locations. With our expertise and our track record with products like ammonia and LNG, we aim to help develop both sides of the hydrogen value chains. We focus on open access infrastructure for LOHCs, ammonia, liquefied hydrogen and e-fuels.#hydrogen #newenergy #WorldHydrogen2024 #ammonia

Vopak US and Canada business unit recently conducted a workshop together with Gulf Coast Growth Ventures with the goal to enhance dock efficiency. The inaugural workshop fostered transparency with an open exchange of ideas between Vopak and Gulf Coast Growth Ventures. The teams navigated through the operational phases, from pre-arrival to departure, breaking the participants into groups to explore improvement opportunities within each area. A key result of the workshop is now having positive actions to track in different areas. Major stakeholders from all roles in the operations were involved. A big thank you to all participants! Together we help the world flow forward.#improve #port_efficiency #partnerships #teamwork
